Microneedling: everything you need to know about this facial treatment

Microneedling: everything you need to know about this facial treatment

Coralie Techer

Facial care methods are evolving. We are offered more and more solutions for perfect skin! Microneedling is one of them. Zoom in on this treatment that aims to be revolutionary.

In the beauty sphere and particularly that associated with facial care, the choice is vast... Every year, new products flourish in institutes to take care of our skin, to restore radiance to a tired complexion or revive the oval of a sagging face.

While kobido massage, facial yoga and facial drainage are all popular treatments for regaining a second youth through manual massage techniques, microneedling, which relies on the use of a small device, is also slowly but surely making its way to the podium of revolutionary treatments! It has already resonated for several years as a promising, non-invasive treatment designed to restore the skin's beauty by boosting cellular regeneration.

To complement this beauty technique, it is recommended to use suitable home care products such as a serum for dark circles which will enhance the look and perfect the effects of microneedling!

What is microneedling?

Its name is intriguing, its appearance can even be scary! Microneedling is a practice that consists of perforating the different layers of the dermis to encourage it to regenerate ... These small perforations are made using a roller or a pen equipped with fine needles. Sometimes the accessory is manual, sometimes electric.

We are entitled to ask ourselves the question... why inflict such treatment on ourselves? You should know that these multiple small cuts will allow the care applied during the treatment to penetrate the skin deeply and therefore act almost instantly. The repeated perforations also stimulate the skin's healing process while boosting the production of collagen and elastin, which will allow the skin to regenerate. Basically, everything that makes beautiful skin is called upon!

The expected effects of microneedling:

A good burst of radiance, an even complexion, reduced wrinkles, more elastic skin, a revived glow, spots and acne scars erased! It also works on stretch marks, since it will push the skin to regenerate...

How exactly does a microneedling treatment work?

Microneedling is basically a treatment offered in an institute by professionals who have been trained in the method with a radiofrequency device! But recently, brands have been offering manual devices: derma rollers or derma pens, which allow you to do it at home. Be careful when you practice it at home, the roller or pen must be sterilized before each use! Let's not forget that these are needles that will penetrate the skin and weaken it before helping it to regenerate.

Practice microneedling at home:

  • We prepare for the session by thoroughly cleaning the skin and disinfecting it of all its impurities (this step is essential to avoid any infections!).
  • We apply the care products of our choice, generally a serum for its intense, rich and deep action.
  • Sterilize the tip of the roller with the needles! You can put it in boiling water.
  • The roller is gently passed over the skin vertically and horizontally.
  • A soothing cream is applied to reduce the inflammation caused by the needles.
  • We disinfect the roller head again!
  • Home treatment can last up to ten minutes and can be repeated once a month depending on the desired result.

Practice microneedling in an institute:

  • The skin is prepared by the professional who ensures that it is properly disinfected.
  • The material is carefully prepared, and the device will be fitted with a single-use head.
  • The microneedling session in the institute lasts around 15 to 20 minutes.
  • Does it hurt? Microperforations are very quick, an unpleasant tingling sensation can be felt, some may have more pain than others, depending on their sensitivity!
  • How much does it cost? It varies from €120 per session, knowing that it is preferable to do microneedling in a course of treatment if you want lasting results!

What are the indications following the session?

Whether done at home or in a salon, microneedling care requires following a few steps for an optimal result but especially to avoid negative side effects! Let's not forget that it is (almost) a small surgical operation that cuts the skin and therefore requires strict post-operation hygiene.

The day and hours following the treatment we avoid:

  • to wear makeup
  • to wear a used mask
  • we avoid touching our face with dirty hands
  • we change our pillowcase
  • we protect our skin from the sun
  • we use a clean towel
  • we avoid any abrasive treatment until a week after the treatment!

How to choose your derma roller for microneedling at home?

The essential step for home care is of course choosing your device! Since it is an accessory that is borderline medical, you don't buy it on the street corner. Always read the instructions in detail and above all pay attention to the reviews posted on shopping sites. The best thing to do is still to buy it in an institute or in a specialized beauty resale center with the help of an approved advisor.

Pay attention to the size and thickness of the needles: depending on the area being treated and the thickness of the skin. It is best to have several tips on hand with needles of different sizes and thicknesses in order to adapt them according to the treatment and the desired area.

Pay attention to the quality of the materials and their origin: you don't buy your device on a dubious site... We prefer a recognized brand and especially one whose manufacturing meets European standards. The needles must be biocompatible and the needles made of titanium (also used for surgical equipment).

WARNING: if you have problem skin (eczema, herpes, frequent irritations, or unhealed skin) microneedling should be avoided! In case of doubt, it is always better to go to an institute or a specialized practitioner who will be able to answer the questions asked.
