Excess self-tanner, how to remove it from the skin?

Excess self-tanner, how to remove it from the skin?

Coralie Techer

This is the solution we like when it comes to giving ourselves tanned skin before summer. But sometimes we can be heavy-handed... How do you remove excess self-tanner from your skin? Here's a quick guide.

Self-tanner is a cosmetic product designed to give the skin the appearance of a natural tan without the need for sun exposure. It is also called fake tanning but has nothing to do with artificial tanning done in UV booths. Self-tanner is available in different forms, such as lotions, creams, sprays or mousses and allows the appearance of an even tan ...

It's important to know that most self-tanners contain an active ingredient called dihydroxyacetone (DHA). DHA is a type of sugar that chemically reacts with dead skin cells to produce a brown pigment called melanoidin. When you apply the self-tanner to your skin, the DHA interacts with the top layer of your skin, causing a temporary discoloration that can last anywhere from a few days to about a week, which is what causes a "fake tan."

Applying self-tanner is a bit of an insider's job. In fact, it usually requires careful skin preparation to get the best results. For example, it's recommended to exfoliate your skin before applying it to remove dead skin cells and achieve a smooth surface. It's also important to apply the self-tanner evenly and consistently to avoid spots or dark areas. But sometimes these guidelines aren't exactly followed, and the application can go sloppy and you need to be able to work it out.

How to remove a failed self-tanner from your skin?

Whether it was a failure (oops, the orange marks) or you simply changed your mind after the fact, it's best to be aware of the different ways to remove your self-tanner once it's been applied to your skin. Fortunately, nothing is permanent, so if you were heavy-handed when applying it, don't panic. It can be remedied with the right techniques.

Skin exfoliation

Exfoliation is one of the most effective methods for removing excess self-tanner residue. Use a gentle scrub, exfoliating sponge, or exfoliating glove (loincloth) to gently rub the skin in circular motions. This will help remove dead skin cells as well as self-tanner pigments from the surface of the skin barrier. You can also make your own body scrub at home by mixing sugar or salt with olive or coconut oil.

The magic of lemon juice

Lemon juice is known for its natural lightening properties. Apply fresh lemon juice to the areas where you want to remove excess self-tanner and leave it on for a few minutes. Then, rinse it off with lukewarm water. Be careful not to expose your skin to the sun immediately after applying lemon juice, as it can make your skin more sensitive to UV rays.

Baking soda

Baking soda mixed with water works wonders for just about everything... In addition to being a great ally for household chores, it can also help remove excess self-tanner. How? Create a paste by mixing baking soda with water until thick. Apply the paste to the affected areas, scrub gently, and rinse with warm water.

Makeup remover milk

Makeup remover can be effective in removing self-tanner. Soak a cotton pad in makeup remover and gently wipe it over the areas to be treated. Leave on for a few minutes, then rinse with warm water.

Vegetable oil

Olive oil, walnut oil, coconut oil, or jojoba oil can help remove those nasty self-tanner marks from your skin. Apply your favorite vegetable oil to your skin, massage gently, and leave it on for a few minutes. Then, rinse with warm water.

Be careful, these methods are natural and although they have already proven themselves, it is important to note that they may not completely remove the self-tanner from the first application. You may have to repeat the process several times to obtain the desired results. Obviously, and as after any skin care , be sure to moisturize your skin (especially if you have dry skin) with a moisturizer after removing the self-tanner in order to keep your skin beautiful.
