How to protect your skin from the summer sun?

How to protect your skin from the summer sun?

Coralie Techer

To avoid reducing your youth and health, discover our tips for effectively protecting your skin from the burning summer sun.

Herald of sunny days, king of our holidays and liberator from bad weather, we love and adore the sun. If in many ways it does us good (it boosts morale and the immune system, promotes the synthesis of vitamin D for the body, soothes eye fatigue and so many others ...) it can, when we abuse it, do us a lot of harm. It is no longer a secret, the abuse of the sun can cause real dangers to health, including the most extreme: skin cancer. The parental monologue about the good spread of sunscreen has never been a way to spoil our summer holidays, but it is indeed a serious recommendation.

What can be the dangers of the sun?

Quick reminder, the sun's ultraviolet rays can cause more or less irreversible damage. For the skin: sunburn, 2nd or 4th degree burns, brown spots, white spots, depigmentation, early appearance of wrinkles (skin aging) and especially cancers (melanomas and carcinomas.) But also for the eyes: serious lesions of the cornea, cataracts or degeneration of the retina, are dangers that should not be taken lightly. As for sunstroke and sunburn, these act insidiously in the evening after long exposure, are not pleasant, and can be more or less serious.

Know when to expose yourself to avoid dangers

Protecting your skin starts with being well-informed. Understanding the dangers and knowing how to avoid them is 90% of the work done. The sun does not have the same intensity at different times of the day... We know that it is sometimes very tempting to enjoy a sunbath during your lunch break, but it is better to avoid all direct exposure from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. (the sun is at its zenith at 12 p.m., when picnicking or on the beach, we eat in the shade). To enjoy a real tanning moment in complete serenity and get a nice tan, we allow ourselves to do it from 4 p.m. and not before!

The right actions to take for protected skin

In addition to paying attention to your hours of sun exposure, there are also good habits to adopt to pamper your skin against UV rays.

skin protection - summer

The essential sun protection:

We obviously think, and first of all, of sunscreen. So yes, it is a good barrier but it is not infallible! First of all, you have to choose a good one, preferably respectful of the oceans (Ocean Friendly) if you plan to swim, sunscreens can be a dangerous pollutant for marine life. Then, you have to remember to renew it, especially after a while in the water. For it to be effective, you have to apply cream about every two hours... Nowadays, there are a multitude of different sunscreens, there is the authentic cream, but also foams, milks, oils or even spray waters! Everyone has their own preference, as long as it is well and truly adopted. Be careful to always choose an SPF of at least 30, or more if your skin is prone to sunburn. Lastly, we think about protecting your lips with a special protective lip balm for summer! In the evening after a day in the sun, you can add an ultra-hydrating and plumping lip balm .

Wear suitable clothing:

The sun can also wreak havoc during a city trip. In summer, a walk in the blazing sun is enough to be dangerous! If you absolutely have to go out at the height of the sun, make sure you dress accordingly. First, remember to cover your head to avoid sunstroke. Luckily, this year again, headgear is more than trendy. Bob, beret, newsboy, wide-brimmed hat or cap, it's up to you! As for accessories, go for sunglasses to protect your eyes as much as possible from UV rays. Obviously, make sure to choose lenses that meet the CE standard (CE3 or CE4) and wear a t-shirt or shirt that covers at least your shoulders and torso!

Prepare your skin in advance… How?

It is increasingly recommended to prepare your skin before summer. Particularly for people with fair, sensitive skin or those who are allergic to the sun (also called lucite). There are several methods, including gradual exposure ! The sun is coming out after months, it is tempting to indulge in an intense afternoon of sunbathing under the first rays, but this is not a good idea! Our skin needs to adapt gradually. We start slowly, an hour here, an hour there... We think about food supplement cures . In the form of gummies, ampoules or even capsules, the food supplement you choose must be suitable for your body. If in doubt, check with a health professional. To prepare your skin, we also think about what we put on our plate. From May onwards, we eat seasonal foods and focus on colourful fruits and vegetables, full of vitamins and beta-carotene that will saturate the skin, enrich it with antioxidants and form a natural protection against the aggression of UV rays. Beautiful skin always requires good hydration! To be protected, the same goes! We rely on a combination of gentle scrub and moisturising body cream to keep the skin permeable to the vagaries of the sun throughout the summer. Note that regular scrubbing during this season also helps maintain a beautiful, even tan.

Repairing your skin after the sun:

We prepare in advance, we repair later! Even when very well prepared, the skin can suffer from the sun. You should always remember to pamper it after your daily outings. An after-sun milk or vegetable oils will do the trick very well to soothe the attacked epidermis. The ideal and natural tip against sunburn? Aloe vera gel (neutral and organic) whose healing and antibacterial properties work miracles on slightly burned skin. As for the skin of the face, to keep it in shape never skip your facial care routine ! It is very important.

Be careful, we avoid UV machines:

Last recommendation, and not least. They have long been recommended to prepare the skin for the sun or more superficially to keep its golden complexion and tanned skin during the winter… Today the danger of these machines is well and truly proven. Using a UV cabin does not prepare the skin at all, it is even the opposite, artificial rays oxidize melanin which has the consequence of considerably harming the skin's sun capital.

Did you know? Eyes must be protected from the sun. Wearing a cap, hat, visor and sunglasses does 90% of the work. But did you know that eyelashes also play a major role in protecting the retina against UV rays? To be sure to have 100% protected eyes, take care of your eyelashes with our ROSELASH serum , the latter ensures healthy eyelashes thanks to its natural formula enriched with biotin!
