The positive effects of biotin for our hair

The positive effects of biotin for our hair

Coralie Techer

Biotin is recognized for its role in tissue health and its significant contribution to maintaining beautiful skin, shiny hair, and strong nails. Why and how can you make the most of this vitamin for your beauty? We'll tell you everything.

The dietary supplement craze is in full swing, and amidst this general euphoria, it's not uncommon to see or hear names and words we don't quite understand... like the term Biotin, for example. This word often appears on the packaging of dietary supplements, as well as cosmetic products aimed at maintaining hair, nails, and sometimes skin. But do we really understand it? We're taking a closer look at the term and its benefits.

What exactly is biotin?

If we go into etymology, the word biotin contains the prefix bio, a derivative of the word biotos, which in Greek means life. The tone is set! You should know that biotin is a water-soluble vitamin, meaning that the body does not store it or produce it in sufficient quantities, so it requires a regular external intake. It is part of the B vitamin group, and is also known as vitamin H or vitamin B8. Its role is important in the proper functioning of our body because it has the power to act at the level of the cell nucleus in order to regulate gene activity...

Basically, it helps the body transform the food we eat into nutrients and energy, two essential players for a healthy life. In addition, it also regulates blood sugar levels, ensures the proper functioning of the nervous system, prevents breakouts (for beautiful skin), promises strong nails, stimulates hair regrowth while promoting its growth and preventing hair loss, for a healthy mane. As you will have understood, biotin (vitamin B8) is essential in many ways, we can trust it to take care of our health and beauty.

What are the benefits of biotin for our hair?

Biotin is widely recommended for hair care. Why? It's simple: by allowing the body to assimilate the right nutrients, it promotes good hair fiber health! In concrete terms, with a sufficient biotin intake, you are guaranteed to have shiny, strong, supple hair that grows quickly and is less prone to hair loss. You may not know it, but biotin, or vitamin B8, is found quite a bit in our diet. We consume it regularly, without even realizing it! To maintain beautiful hair, consider including these biotin-rich foods in your diet.

Foods of plant or animal origin that contain biotin:

  • Dry yeast
  • the liver
  • the kidney
  • egg yolk
  • mushrooms
  • beans
  • lentils
  • salmon
  • the banana
  • sweet potato, oats, almonds...

Generally speaking, a balanced diet allows the body to assimilate enough of it, but it is not forbidden to supplement this intake by taking food supplements or by using cosmetic treatments that contain it.

Vitamin H or B8 is also excellent for taking care of brittle nails and making them stronger! It's also recommended for beautiful skin since it prevents imperfections. In these cases, taking a dietary supplement can be combined with a beauty routine that includes biotin-based treatments!

How much biotin can you actually take?

When it comes to quantity and biotin, the numbers aren't really established. There's very little talk about biotin deficiency in adults, as it's easy to find in our general diet (see the list of foods that contain it above). However, if we're looking to quantify it exactly, the Research Institute for Well-Being, Medicine and Sports recommends an intake of 50 to 60 micrograms per day for adults and the elderly.

If you choose to take biotin as a dietary supplement (in capsule, powder, or gummie form), simply follow the dosage instructions on the box and, above all, read the recommendations carefully. Be aware that some dietary supplement treatments require lifestyle changes. Regarding aesthetic benefits through cosmetic treatments, since biotin is not ingested, it can be used morning and evening.

Can biotin be combined with other nutrients for hair health?

For even greater effectiveness, biotin can be combined with various other nutrients. Especially when you decide to take it for the good of your hair. You can easily combine biotin with silica (bamboo extract) which protects against oxidative stress, among other things, marine collagen, vitamin D which stimulates the hair follicle, zinc (essential for strengthening the hair fiber), selenium or even vitamin C. It is not uncommon to find dietary supplements that include most of these nutrients in the same formula.

Biotin in cosmetic care

Although it's widely used in food supplements, Biotin is also very present in cosmetic products (serums, shampoos, masks, etc.), and that's a good thing. At ROSEGOLD, for example, vitamin H is used in the eyelash beauty serum , as well as in the ROSEHAIR serum, which cares for the scalp and boosts hair growth.

The presence of this vitamin in the natural formula of these treatments allows the body to assimilate the other active ingredients present in its composition. Biotin also boosts the growth and hair regrowth effect that characterizes both serums. This allows for convincing results from the first month of use! For long-lasting effects, it is recommended to use these serums as a course of treatment, for up to six months, morning and evening.

Biotin and contraindications, what should we know?

If you choose to take biotin in the form of a dietary supplement, you should know that this requires some adjustments. Indeed, biotin is not absorbed if the body consumes alcohol, for example! It is also good to take into account the possibility of suffering side effects, as with all things, before starting a treatment (external or internal) check that you do not suffer from any allergies! There is no real proof that taking Biotin in large quantities is dangerous for your health, but it is always better to respect the indicated dosages and remain on your guard when starting a new treatment.
