How to really clean your makeup brushes properly?

How to really clean your makeup brushes properly?

Coralie Techer

This is an essential step that should not be skipped. Cleaning makeup brushes not only preserves their condition but also the skin. How to do it? Follow the guide.

Putting on makeup every day is a habit for many of us. It wouldn't occur to us (normally...) to end our day without removing our makeup*! However, after applying our makeup remover balm and doing our two-step cleansing, we forget to pay attention to the accessories that helped us look our best. Once the beauty blender is soaked in foundation, the powder brush is particularly full of pigments and the puff filled with translucent powder, we don't think about giving them the proper care and cleansing they deserve!

Why is it essential to clean your makeup brushes?

Cleaning makeup accessories is essential for several reasons:

  1. Hygiene: Makeup brushes generally accumulate cosmetic residue, oil, dirt, and bacteria over time. If you don't clean them regularly, these residues can multiply and contaminate your makeup, which can lead to skin problems such as irritation, breakouts, and infections.

  2. Makeup Performance: When bristle brushes are dirty, residue from previous products can mix with the new products you use, altering the color and texture of the products. This can make makeup application less precise and less even.

  3. Brush Life: Product residue and bacteria can build up in brush bristles, which can damage the fibers and shorten the life of your brushes. Cleaning your brushes regularly will keep them in good condition and extend their use.

  4. Preventing Skin Problems: Dirty brushes in direct contact with the skin can transfer bacteria, oils, and other impurities to it. This can clog pores and cause skin problems such as pimples, blackheads, and skin infections. Regular brush cleaning helps maintain healthier, clearer skin.

How to properly clean your makeup brushes?

Cleaning brushes is not really complicated but requires a specific technique and steps to be applied at least once a week, or even once a day if you use your brushes regularly.

Prepare your tools

Gather all the brushes you want to clean. You'll also need warm water, a mild soap or makeup brush cleaner, a clean towel, and a place to dry your brushes, such as a brush holder or folded towel.

Wet the bristles

Start by wetting the synthetic bristles of the brushes with warm water. Be careful not to completely submerge the metal part of the brush, as this could damage the glue that holds the bristles in place.

Apply the soap or cleanser

Squeeze a small amount of mild soap (or shampoo) into the palm of your hand or directly onto the brush bristles. You can also use a cleanser made specifically for makeup brushes. Gently work the soap or cleanser into a lather by rubbing the brush bristles in your hands or gently sliding them across a textured cleaning surface.

Clean gently

Rinse the brush bristles under warm water while continuing to gently rub them with your fingers to remove any makeup residue. Continue rinsing until the water runs clear and all soap or cleanser residue is removed.

Remove excess water

Once the brushes are rinsed, gently squeeze the bristles with your fingers to remove excess water. Be sure not to twist or pull on the bristles, as this can damage them.

Drying

Place cleaned brushes on a clean towel or drying rack to air dry. Make sure the bristles are slightly elevated to allow for optimal airflow. Avoid drying brushes upright, as this can cause water to penetrate the metal and weaken the glue.

Hair reshaping

Once the brushes are dry, you can reshape them by gently running your fingers over the bristles to restore them to their original shape.

Cleaning your brushes regularly will help maintain their performance, prevent skin problems and extend their lifespan, so never skip this step again and take care of your brushes as much as you would your skin.
